Sucker Punch’s One-Two Punch

There’s nothing quite the first reveal of a project that’s been on your radar, but that you’re undecided about. Zack Snyder may not be one of my favourite filmmakers, but even in his flawed adaptation of Watchmen there was enough to like, and enough visual and storytelling acumen that he’s become a director to watch. Snyder movied on quickly from the comic-book adaptation to an intriguing action-fantasy film with an ensemble female cast and the equally intriguing title of Sucker Punch.

Even though it isn’t out until next year, the first teaser and posters for the movie have been unleashed, and oh my, have they ever made an impression!

The Posters!
Instead of a single teaser poster, the filmmakers have chosen to go with six great posters depicting the six main characters of the film, while including elements of the fantasy sequences in the movie (such as the robots and a dragon).

They’re very striking posters, quite a bit unlike most movie one-sheets, and have an art style that will make any fan of steampunk fantasy fiction (until now mostly relegated to books) feel at home. I’d have a hard time picking one — right now I want all of them on my wall — but I don’t mind waiting until the movie releases (in March 2011) to get the one with my favourite character.

Of course, the poster is only half the story…

The Teaser!

I’ll say one thing for Zack Snyder: even if you don’t like his movies, you have to admit that his porjects always have kickass teasers! Even now the teaser for Watchmen with its brooding Smashing Pumpkins soundtrack is etched in my mind, and I can almost guarantee you that after the many times you watch Sucker Punch’s teaser — it will be too. Well, what are you waiting for?

No doubt about it: Sucker Punch just became one of my most anticipated films. I’ve always liked Zack Snyder’s visual style, his ability to put a scene together. Earlier he’s mostly worked from others’ material, be it the lean (300) or the dense (Watchmen). This movie is an original piece, and he seems quite excited about it.

Frankly, so am I.

Just as that other non-sequel, original movie about dreams and fantasies (Inception) currently reigns at the box-office and pleases the hearts and minds of geeks everywhere, so I hope that Sucker Punch lives up to its name next year.

Can’t wait!

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Heroic Princes, Beautiful Princesses, and… illegal weapons in the Middle East? It may be the strangest mix of things that went into Mike Newell’s adaptation of the classic video game, but is this movie more ‘next level’ than ‘game over’?

Iron Man 2

It’s version 2.0 of the franchise that showed that superhero movies could be fun and exciting all at the same time. So, does team Iron Man successfully launch a well oiled new machine, or is this a bug-riddled bucket of bolts that should be sent back to its manufacturer?

Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. is Sherlock Holmes. Jude Law is Dr. Watson. Guy Ritchie is behind the camera. What more do you need to know about the wittiest romp of the year?

Avatar

The biggest movie of the year, and possible the rapidly ending decade. But is James Cameron’s alien epic a worthwhile trip to another world, or should you just stay put at home?

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Can a frenzied blockbuster sequel about giant robots beating the scrap out of each other possibly be one of the most important movies of our times?

Fast & Furious

More pedal-to-the-metal street racing, car chases, Jordana Brewster, and Vin Diesel repeatedly making bad car/girl puns in his gravely voice? Yes please!

Chandni Chowk to China

Kung-Fu action meets Bollywood madness in this cross-culture caper about a bumbling cook from India who travels to China to save a village from an evil gangster. The ingredients are all there, but is this fusion dish perfectly balanced, or just an overcooked mess?

The International

Clive Owen & Naomi Watts team up with the director of Run Lola Run to make a movie about a crafty bank that releases during a financial crisis, and it isn’t about people running, explosions, or subprime lending? This I have to see!

Superbowl 2009 Movie Trailers

Every year millions of people around the world gather in front of their television screens to watch an epic clash of rivals as they duke it out for our attention. Oh, and in between there’s some football too.
Like many people who aren’t American, the actual game being played at the Superbowl is of no interest [...]
